The Sagacious Map Spotter

At a busy book market in Prague, Mira noticed that the rare-map stall had suddenly drawn a crowd. A man in a velvet coat was offering double prices, but only for maps with faded blue corners. Her father called him a sagacious collector.

Sagacious means having or showing keen judgement and wisdom. It also means clever and wise, especially when making judgements or decisions.

Mira watched carefully. The collector ignored the oldest maps and chose three cheap-looking ones from the same box. That seemed too sagacious to be random. When he reached for a fourth, Mira spotted a tiny lighthouse stamp on its edge, almost hidden under dust.

"Papa," she whispered, "check that mark."

Her father frowned, then opened a guidebook beneath the table. His face changed. The stamp belonged to a famous printer whose maps had once guided river merchants through Bohemia.

The collector gave Mira a sharp look. "A sagacious child," he said, not sounding pleased.

Her father gently closed the box before more maps disappeared. "These need proper valuing."

The crowd murmured. The collector's smile thinned.

That afternoon, a museum expert confirmed Mira's guess. The maps were far more valuable than anyone had known. Her father placed one in the shop window with a small card: Found through sagacity and sharp eyes.

Mira grinned at the lighthouse stamp, tiny as a secret, and felt wonderfully sagacious.
