Adore — A Vocabulary Story
The Beloved Garden
Nadia's grandfather didn't say much. He let his hands do the talking — pruning, planting, turning soil with a patience that made it clear he adored the garden.
Adore means to love and respect someone or something deeply.
"Why do you spend all day out here?" she asked one Saturday, trailing him down the narrow path between the rose bushes.
He didn't answer straight away. He crouched beside a pale pink bloom and pinched away a yellowing leaf, careful as a surgeon.
"Your gran planted these," he said finally. "Every single one."
Nadia knew that already. But she'd never watched her grandfather in the garden before — watched him move between each bush, unhurried and deliberate. She could plainly see his respect for the whole garden, especially in the way he handled even the smallest stem.
"She used to adore Saturday mornings out here," he said quietly.
Nadia looked around at the garden — the tangled roses, the crooked stone path, the old wooden bench worn smooth in the middle — and understood, for the first time, why he never changed a single thing about it.
"I adore it too," she said. She hadn't planned to say it. It just came out.
He looked at her then, "I know," he said. "She'd have been glad of that."
Nadia picked up the small trowel he'd left beside the path and began turning the soil.
They worked quietly until the light changed.
