What the Commentator Said

Every Saturday, Idris and his grandad claimed the sofa, two mugs of tea, and the big match on telly.

This particular Saturday, Rovers — a small, scrappy club Grandad had loved since he was Idris's age — were playing City, who had more money than sense and a stadium like a spaceship.

"Listen to him," Grandad grumbled at the commentator. "Every time City touch the ball, it's magnificent. Rovers make a brilliant tackle and he says nothing. The man's clearly biased."

Biased means unfairly favouring one person, group, or view over another. It also means showing a strong personal opinion that affects judgement.

Idris watched closely. Grandad had a point — the commentator really did seem to be unfairly talking about City like royalty and Rovers like a nuisance.

But then Rovers fouled City's striker, plain as day, and Grandad leapt up.

"Never a foul! He dived! Daylight robbery!"

Idris raised an eyebrow. "Grandad," he said gently, "that was a foul. You're a bit biased yourself, you know."

Grandad opened his mouth, then laughed — a great rumbling laugh that shook his tea.

"You cheeky thing. Suppose I am." He settled back. "Maybe everyone's a little biased about the things they love."

Rovers scored in the last minute. The commentator barely mentioned it.

Grandad didn't mind. He and Idris were already on their feet, hugging, spilling tea everywhere — gloriously, happily biased towards their team and not pretending otherwise.
