Breaking a Family Tradition
The Fernandez family had one tradition that could not be questioned: Sunday pizza from Rosario's.
Dani had always been the quiet source of dissent in the house. Why this route to school? Why this brand of cereal? Small rebellions, mostly ignored. But this one landed differently.
Dissent means the expression or holding of opinions at variance with those previously, commonly, or officially held; disagreement with the majority or established view.
"I don't want pizza," Dani said, one ordinary Sunday.
The silence that followed was extraordinary.
Dad lowered his phone. Mum looked up. Grandpa Roberto set down his newspaper.
Every Sunday for nine years, without exception, they'd ordered the same thing — margherita for Mum, pepperoni for Dad, four-cheese for Grandpa Roberto.
"You don't want pizza," Grandpa repeated, as though she'd suggested something genuinely bewildering.
"I want noodles," said Dani cheerfully. "From that new place on the high street."
Her brother Felix immediately switched sides. "Actually — same."
Grandpa Roberto pressed his hand to his chest as though the suggestion had wounded him personally. Deeply. Perhaps permanently.
Mum was already reaching for her phone to find the menu. She'd quietly admired Dani's dissent for years — it just usually involved smaller stakes than Rosario's.
"Noodles," she said decisively. "Let's try something new."
"Fine," muttered Grandpa Roberto eventually, after a long, theatrical silence. "But I'm not sharing."
Dani grinned. Sometimes, all it took was one person willing to say something different — and a family just patient enough to actually listen.
