Diminution — A Vocabulary Story
The Shrinking Pile at Portobello Road
Mei arrived at Portobello Road Market with a battered suitcase of her grandmother's old buttons, hoping to sell them and pay for her bus fare home to Bristol. Her stall neighbour, Hassan, ran a record shop on wheels and watched her arrange tiny porcelain discs in neat rows.
By ten o'clock, a woman bought a handful for three pounds. By noon, a costume designer swept up half the tray. Mei noticed the diminution of her stock with mixed feelings: every sale was a triumph, yet the diminution made the suitcase look sadly empty.
Diminution means a gradual reduction in size, importance, or strength.
"Funny thing about a market," Hassan said, stacking vinyl. "The diminution of your goods is the increase of your pocket."
Mei laughed, but a knot tightened in her chest. Some buttons had belonged to her grandmother's wedding coat. She slipped three pearl ones into her pocket, refusing further diminution of the family ones.
A tall man in a green mackintosh paused. "How much for the lot?"
"Forty pounds," Mei blurted, surprising herself.
He paid without haggling. The diminution was now total; the suitcase held only three pearl buttons and a folded receipt.
Hassan whistled. "That's a proper sale."
Mei counted the notes twice. She bought Hassan a cup of chai with the change, then walked towards the bus stop, the lightened case swinging at her side.
