Lacklustre — A Vocabulary Story
The Lacklustre Lantern
In the bustling night markets of Hoi An, Min was determined to win the annual lantern competition. His older cousin, Hui, a street-food vendor with paint-stained fingers, had agreed to help.
"Show me your design," Hui said, wiping her hands on her apron.
Min held up a pale, droopy lantern. Hui tilted her head. "It's a bit lacklustre, isn't it?"
Lacklustre means lacking brightness, energy, or vitality. It also means dull and uninspiring.
Min frowned.
"The judges won't notice a lacklustre lantern beside hundreds of glowing ones," Hui added.
Min's shoulders sank. He'd spent weeks on it, but compared to the dazzling silks fluttering above the river, his effort did look lacklustre. Even the candle inside flickered in a lacklustre way, as though embarrassed.
"Don't sulk," Hui said briskly. "Unfinished isn't failed. What does your lantern mean to you?"
Min hesitated. "My father," he said quietly. "He's been out at sea for three weeks. I want him to see this from his boat when he comes home."
Hui's eyes softened. "Then make it bright enough to find."
Min began again, painting tiny fishing boats around the rim — boats like his father's — threading gold cord through the seams, and replacing the weak candle with a brighter one.
By dusk, the lantern glowed warmly, casting rippling shadows of boats across the cobblestones. It wasn't the grandest entry, but it was no longer lacklustre.
The judges paused at his stall. One smiled.
"Now this," she said, "has a story inside it."
Min grinned. Sometimes lacklustre was simply the beginning.
