Abscission — A Vocabulary Story
The Big Drop
Oscar had been watching the old oak tree at the end of his garden for eleven whole days. Every leaf had dropped except one — a crinkly brown fellow clinging to the highest branch like it had paid rent.
"That leaf is refusing to abscise," said Dad, sipping his tea. "Stubbornest leaf I've ever met."
Oscar appointed himself Official Abscission Referee. He made a badge from a biscuit wrapper and everything. Each morning he marched outside, stared up at the leaf, and shouted, "Any day now!"
Abscission means the natural shedding of leaves, flowers, or fruit from a plant. It can also mean the act of cutting something off or away.
The leaf did not care.
Oscar tried encouragement. He sang to it. He told it jokes. He even pointed out how comfy the leaf pile below looked, all crunchy and inviting. Still no abscission. The leaf just flapped smugly in the breeze.
"Maybe it's waiting for an audience," said his big sister Ruby, who was raking with the enthusiasm of a sleepy sloth. "Some leaves won't abscise without applause."
So on Saturday, Oscar set up two deckchairs, a flask of hot chocolate and a sign that read THE BIG DROP. Dad brought binoculars. Ruby brought a whistle, for refereeing purposes.
They waited. And waited. Oscar's hot chocolate went cold.
Then — a gust! The branch shivered, the stem let go at last, and the leaf abscised in the most dramatic spiral anyone in Little Wickham had ever witnessed. It was, Dad declared, the finest abscission in the whole history of the garden.
Ruby blew the whistle. Oscar caught the leaf before it landed and held it up like a trophy.
"Eleven days," he whispered. "Worth every single one."
