The bake sale rescue

Maya's class needed $500 for their zoo trip. They'd organised a Saturday bake sale, but by noon they'd only made £87.

"We're doomed!" wailed Jack, watching another customer walk past their sad table of burned biscuits.

That's when Maya's mum arrived. As a restaurant manager, she surveyed the scene with expert eyes.

"Right," said Mum. "You need acumen — that means sharp judgement and smart decision-making. Let me show you what business acumen looks like. It's making good judgements in a business scenario."

She studied the three other bake sales nearby. "See that queue at the fancy cupcake stall? They're overwhelmed. That's your opportunity."

"But our biscuits are terrible!" said Maya.

"So pivot. You've got ingredients left, yes?" Mum's acumen told her to check their supplies first.

"Perfect. Make something quick that nobody else offers."

"Fruit smoothies! It's boiling hot. Everyone wants cold drinks, and these other stalls only have baked goods."

By 2pm, they had a massive queue. Maya's business acumen grew as she noticed patterns. "Mum, kids want strawberry. Adults want mango. Should we make more mango?"

"Excellent business acumen!" said Mum proudly. "You're learning to spot what customers actually want, not just what we think they want."

Jack developed his own business acumen too. "These people are buying smoothies then queuing at the cupcake stall. Should we partner up and share customers?"

"Brilliant business acumen!" Mum beamed.

The partnership worked. By 4pm, Maya counted their earnings. "£520!"

"Your mum's business acumen saved us," said Jack.

"Actually, you both showed business acumen today. Maya spotted buying patterns. Jack created that partnership. Acumen means making smart judgements and strategic decisions based on what you know. You're both naturals."

Maya grinned. "Next time we'll have more business acumen from the start!"

"That's the spirit," laughed Mum. "Though maybe practise baking first too and get some baking acumen before your next cake sale!"
