Allusion — A Vocabulary Story
Giulia and the Riddling Dad
Giulia's dad never said anything the ordinary way. If the kitchen was messy, he'd sigh, "Goldilocks has clearly been here." If Giulia's little brother Marco climbed the garden wall, Dad would shout, "Careful, Jack, that's not a beanstalk!"
Giulia loved spotting his allusions. It was like a treasure hunt hidden inside talking.
Allusion means an indirect or brief reference to something without mentioning it directly.
One rainy Saturday, the family drove to Nonna's house for lunch. Halfway there, the car spluttered to a stop.
"Houston, we have a problem," said Dad.
"That's an allusion to the astronauts," whispered Giulia to Marco, feeling rather clever.
Dad opened the bonnet and stared at the engine the way Giulia stared at maths homework. Steam curled into the drizzle.
"We need a hero," he announced. "Someone strong. Someone brave. Someone... with a phone that isn't out of battery."
Mum held up her phone in triumph and rang the breakdown service.
While they waited, Marco grew grumpy and hungry, kicking the back of the seat.
"Patience, young Skywalker," said Dad.
Marco frowned. "Who's Skywalker?"
"It's an allusion," said Giulia grandly. "From the space films. It's Dad's way of saying calm down without saying calm down."
When the mechanic finally arrived and fixed the engine in three minutes flat, Giulia saw her chance. She lifted her chin and said, "You're a real fairy godmother."
Dad's mouth fell open. Then he beamed. "An allusion! My own daughter!"
"I had a good coach," said Giulia, and buckled her seatbelt like a champion.
