Antithetical — A Vocabulary Story
The Party of Opposites
Yesenia and her twin brother Mateo shared a birthday, which sounded lovely until you tried planning the party.
Yesenia wanted a disco with flashing lights, glitter cannons and music loud enough to rattle the windows. Mateo wanted a peaceful afternoon of jigsaw puzzles and gentle humming. Their ideas were completely antithetical, and their mum said so while rubbing her forehead at the kitchen table.
Antithetical means directly opposed or contrasting in nature; showing the qualities of an antithesis or sharp contrast.
"A quiet disco?" Yesenia suggested.
"A loud jigsaw?" Mateo offered.
Their mum groaned softly. "You two are the antithesis of each other. One party. Two opposite children. Help me."
They tried a test run in the garden. Yesenia turned her music up. Mateo put his puzzle pieces down and pressed his hands over his ears. Then Mateo hummed his calm tune, and Yesenia flopped dramatically onto the grass as if boredom itself had knocked her over. Everything one twin loved worked antithetically against the other, like an umbrella in a swimming pool.
Then Yesenia noticed the garden shed. "Wait. Two zones! The Loud End and the Hushed End!"
On party day, half the garden thumped with music and glitter, while behind the shed, beanbags and puzzles sat in blissful quiet. Guests wandered between the two, giggling at how antithetical the ends felt, as if stepping between two different planets.
Their mum relaxed in a deckchair exactly in the middle, sipping her tea.
"Perfect," she said. "I can hear the disco with one ear and absolutely nothing with the other."
