Cantankerous — A Vocabulary Story
The Cantankerous Car
Takashi's family owned the most cantankerous car in the whole street. It was old, green, and grumbled like it had been asked to do something dreadful, even when it was only going to the shops.
Cantankerous means bad-tempered, argumentative, and uncooperative.
"Right," said Dad on Saturday morning, rubbing his hands together. "Seaside day. Everybody in."
The car had other ideas. When Dad turned the key, the engine coughed, spluttered, and went silent, as if to say absolutely not.
"It's being cantankerous again," sighed Mum, buckling her seatbelt anyway.
Takashi knew the routine. The car had rules. You had to pat the dashboard twice, wind the window down exactly halfway, and say, "Good morning, car," in your politest voice. Skip a single step and it would sulk in the driveway all day.
So Takashi patted. Dad wound. Mum said good morning so politely she sounded like the Queen. The engine grumbled cantankerously to life, rattling and huffing the whole way to the coast, slowing down at every hill as if hills were a personal insult.
But when they finally rolled onto the seafront, something surprising happened. The engine settled into a soft, happy purr.
"It likes the sea!" said Takashi, amazed.
All afternoon, while the family ate chips and dodged the waves, the cantankerous old car sat gleaming in the sunshine, not grumbling once.
On the drive home it rattled and huffed again, back to its usual cantankerousness. Takashi patted the dashboard kindly.
"Don't worry," he whispered. "We'll bring you back soon."
