Chronological — A Vocabulary Story
Sparkliest Order
Yerin had one job before Dad's birthday party: stick fifty family photos into an album, in chronological order, oldest first. Easy.
Chronological means arranged in the order in which events happened, from earliest to latest. It can also mean relating to the recording of time or dates.
Except her little brother Minho had "helped" first.
Yerin opened the album and blinked. On page one, Dad was a grown man with a beard. On page two, he was a baby in a bath. On page three, he was a teenager with truly enormous hair. According to this album, Dad had shrunk, sprouted, and shrunk again like a very confused plant.
"Minho," said Yerin slowly, "this is not chronological. Baby Dad goes first, then Big-Hair Dad, then Beard Dad."
Minho shrugged. "I put them in sparkliest order."
Yerin peeled every photo off and spread them across the carpet like a giant puzzle. She hunted for clues. Wrinkly baby? Start of the line. Wedding suit? Near the end. That haircut? Definitely the middle — nobody would choose that twice.
Slowly, a whole life stretched across the floor in perfect chronological order, from tiny bath-time Dad to birthday-cake Dad.
When Dad opened the album that evening, he turned the pages in silence, watching himself grow up one photo at a time.
"It's all chronological," said Yerin proudly. "Your whole life, first to last."
Dad paused at the enormous-hair photo and winced. "Could this one accidentally fall out?"
"No," said Yerin firmly. "It's history."
Minho patted the album. "I still think sparkliest order was better."
