Yuto and the Walkie-Talkie
Yuto loved talking. He could talk about clouds, toes, cheese, and once spent a whole car journey describing a puddle.
So when Dad handed him a walkie-talkie on their camping trip, Yuto's eyes went wide with joy.
"Mum and Hana are down at the stream," said Dad. "These radios have tiny batteries, so keep your messages concise. Say what matters, then stop."
Concise means giving a lot of information clearly in few words.
Yuto nodded. Then he pressed the button.
"Hello, Mum! It's me, Yuto! I'm at the tent, which is green, and Dad is here, and there's a beetle near my boot, and the beetle is shiny, and speaking of shiny, did you pack the—"
The walkie-talkie gave a sad little beep. Low battery.
Dad rubbed his forehead. "Concise, Yuto. Like this." He pressed the button. "Dinner at six. Over."
Yuto frowned. That felt far too short for someone with so many excellent thoughts.
Then he spotted it. A huge grey cloud, rolling towards the stream like a grumpy elephant. Mum and Hana had the picnic blanket AND the marshmallows.
Yuto grabbed the radio. His thumb hovered. Beetle news? No. Puddle thoughts? No.
"Rain coming! Come back now! Over!"
The battery held. Minutes later, Mum and Hana came puffing up the hill just as the first fat drops fell, marshmallows safe and dry.
"That," said Mum, shaking water from her hood, "was beautifully concise."
Yuto grinned. "Thanks. Now, about that beetle..."
