Debacle — A Vocabulary Story
The Great Cake Debacle
In a small bakery in Marrakech, a young baker named Yusuf was making his very first wedding cake. His best friend Amira watched from a stool in the corner.
"Don't worry," Yusuf said. "Nothing can go wrong."
That was the start of the debacle.
Debacle means a sudden, complete, and humiliating failure or collapse.
First, he tipped in salt instead of sugar. Then his cat, Zayn, jumped on the table. Flour puffed up like a cloud. Eggs rolled off and went splat on the floor.
"This is a debacle!" Amira giggled, wiping flour from her nose.
"It is not a debacle," Yusuf said, but his voice wobbled. The oven was now smoking. The icing was as runny as soup. A pigeon flew in through the open window and landed right on top of the cake.
"Okay," Yusuf sighed. "It is a tiny debacle."
Amira shook her head. "Tiny? My friend, this is the biggest debacle Marrakech has ever seen."
They sat on the floor and laughed until their tummies hurt. Then Amira stood up and rolled up her sleeves.
"Right," she said. "Let's fix this debacle together."
They baked all night. They sang silly songs. They shooed the pigeon and washed the cat. By sunrise, a beautiful cake stood on the counter, sweet and tall and perfect.
The bride loved it. Nobody guessed about the night before.
Yusuf winked at Amira. "What debacle?" he whispered.
And they laughed all over again.
