Over and Out

Shahid had a new pair of walkie-talkies, and he had a plan. His sister Sana would stand by the swings. He would stand behind the big oak at the far end of the park. Then they would send secret messages.

"Testing, testing," said Shahid into his handset. "Can you hear me, Sana?"

A crackle came back, then a voice that sounded like a duck talking underwater. "Wurble flurble zonk."

Shahid frowned at the handset. "That is gibberish," he said. "Say it again, slowly."

Gibberish means talk or writing that makes no sense at all.

"Wurble flurble zonk," said the handset, louder this time and no clearer.

Shahid marched halfway across the grass. "Sana, you are talking gibberish," he called.

Sana waved both arms. "I am not," she shouted. "You are the one talking gibberish. Mine said blorp blorp fizzle."

They met in the middle by the bench where their mum sat with her book. She listened to each handset in turn and laughed. "The batteries are nearly flat," she said. "Everything you say comes out as gibberish."

Shahid had an idea. He pressed the button and said, very slowly, "Mum. Is. Brilliant."

His mum's handset hissed and said, "Mub. Blizz. Bollunt."

"That is still gibberish," said Sana, "but I think I liked it."

Their mum found two fresh batteries in her bag, because mums always do. Shahid ran back to the oak, pressed the button and whispered, "Can you hear me now?"

"Loud and clear," said Sana. "And a tiny bit boring."

Shahid grinned. "Wurble flurble zonk," he said, just for old times' sake.
