Integrity — A Vocabulary Story
The Answer Sheet
Nadia had the answer sheet.
She hadn't stolen it — it had fluttered from Mr Patel's folder onto her chair, face-up, unmistakably real. The science test was in four minutes.
Her best friend, Seb, leaned across the aisle and went wide-eyed. "Is that the answer sheet?"
Nadia looked at the paper.
She thought about her dad. He had this thing about integrity — he'd once noticed a cashier gave him too much change and handed it straight back.
Integrity means the quality of being honest and morally right, even when it is difficult.
She'd thought her dad was being a bit silly then. She didn't think he was silly now.
She picked up the answer sheet, walked to the front of the room, and placed it quietly on Mr Patel's desk.
He looked up, startled. Then he nodded — with clear understanding in his eyes.
Seb raised his eyebrows when she sat back down.
"You could've just—"
"I know," Nadia said.
The test began. Question one was hard. Question three was harder. She reached question seven and realised she actually knew the answer — not because of any sheet, but because she'd revised it twice on Wednesday evening.
She didn't get full marks. She got a B minus, which felt strangely satisfying.
Mr Patel had handed hers back last. There was a small smiley face beside her grade. This wasn't just about the grade itself, Nadia realised — it was recognition of her integrity and that she honestly deserved it.
