Majestic — A Vocabulary Story
Worth Getting Rained On For
Darnell had promised his gran he'd take her to the seaside, and now, standing on the wind-scoured headland, he wondered if it had been a mistake. Rain spat sideways. His trainers squelched. Gran, however, marched ahead with her walking stick like a general inspecting troops.
"Slow down," he called.
"Nonsense," she said. "We're nearly there."
They crested the ridge, and Darnell stopped breathing. Below them, the cliffs fell away into a churning grey sea, and rising from the water stood an enormous arch of stone, carved by a thousand years of waves. Gulls wheeled around it. The whole view was breathtakingly powerful.
"That," said Gran quietly, "is why we came."
Darnell had expected a beach, an ice cream, maybe a donkey. He had not expected something so utterly majestic that his complaining shrivelled up and blew away with the rain.
Majestic means having or showing impressive beauty, dignity or grandeur.
"I used to come here with your grandad," Gran said. "Before you were even an idea."
They stood together, soaked through, saying nothing. The sea heaved against the majestic rock, again and again, and the rock simply endured.
On the bus home, Gran fell asleep on his shoulder. Darnell didn't move a muscle. Some things, he was learning, were worth getting rained on for.
