Palpable — A Vocabulary Story
The Palpable Silence
Amara knew something was wrong the moment Luca arrived at the community football pitch without his lucky blue scarf. The silence between them was palpable.
Palpable means capable of being touched or felt. It also means easily perceived or obvious.
Usually, Luca joked before matches, but today his boots dragged through the dust. Amara had saved him a place on her team, yet the disappointment on his face was palpable when he saw the captain's armband on her sleeve.
"You wanted it," she said quietly.
He shrugged. "You earned it."
The whistle blew. For ten minutes, Luca barely passed to her. The tension became so palpable that even the younger players stopped shouting. Then a loose ball rolled towards the goal, and Amara slipped on the dry grass. The other team surged forward.
Luca sprinted back. He blocked the shot with his knee, stumbled, and still managed to nudge the ball to Amara. The old trust between them returned, almost palpable in the quick glance they shared.
Amara crossed the ball. Luca scored.
After the match, she untied the captain's band and held it out to him.
"Next match, we lead together?" she asked.
Luca grinned, wrapping it around his wrist. Their friendship felt palpable again, like the warm dust on their hands and the cheer still buzzing in the air.
