The Great Garage Tidy Up

Saturday morning, Dad pulled up the garage door and groaned. Inside sat fifteen years of stuff, piled in a way that was haphazard. Tennis rackets leaned against paint tins. A bicycle wheel balanced on a box marked "Christmas??". Somewhere underneath, allegedly, was the lawnmower.

"Right, Sofia," Dad said. "We're sorting this today."

Sofia loved a system. She loved labels and neat rows and Things In Their Place. So the haphazard mountain in front of her wasn't a disaster — it was a challenge.

Haphazard means lacking any obvious principle of organisation. It also means random or chaotic.

"We can't just grab stuff randomly," she said, hands on hips. "That's how it got like this. We need zones."

Dad raised an eyebrow but handed her the masking tape.

By noon they had four zones: Keep, Donate, Bin, and a smaller one Sofia labelled "Dad Will Argue About These." That last pile grew alarmingly fast.

"The bowling trophy?" she asked.

"Sentimental," Dad insisted.

"The single ski?"

"...Sentimental."

Slowly, the haphazard heap became something with shape. Rows appeared. Shelves emptied and refilled with purpose.

At three o'clock, Dad sat back, sweaty and triumphant, and they could actually see the lawnmower.

"Tidy," he sighed happily.

Sofia grinned. Order, she thought, beat chaos every single time.
