Ramble — A Vocabulary Story
The Lost Map of Pen y Fan
Marina had always wanted to ramble across the Brecon Beacons, but she hadn't expected to be chasing a stranger while doing it. Her mother, a mountain rescue volunteer, had given her one job: hold the map. Then a sudden gust whisked it from her gloves, and a man in a green jacket scooped it up and bolted up the slope towards Pen y Fan.
Ramble means to talk or write at length in a confused or inconsequential way. It also means to walk for pleasure, typically without a definite route.
"He's pretending to ramble," Marina muttered, watching him pause to admire a sheep, then march on suspiciously fast. Why would anyone take a hand-drawn map unless it showed something worth finding?
She followed at a careful distance. The path narrowed, and the wind hurled itself against the heather. Other walkers passed cheerfully, calling out greetings and swapping stories of weekend rambles across Wales. Marina smiled politely, never losing sight of the green jacket.
At the summit, she found him crouched behind a cairn, comparing the map to a battered notebook. Marina recognised the handwriting at once.
"That's my grandfather's," she said firmly. "He drew it before he died."
The man flushed. "He was my walking partner. I only wanted to finish the ramble we planned."
Marina considered him, then sat down on the cold stone. "Then let's finish it together. But I'm holding the map this time."
They began the long ramble down, two strangers stitched by one quiet promise.
