The Knot at Cocora Valley

Paulo tightened the laces of his walking boots and stared up at the wax palms of Cocora Valley. They rose like green needles into the Colombian mist, taller than any tree he had ever seen. Beside him, his hiking partner Natalya was wrestling with a tangle of climbing rope.

"I cannot unravel this," she muttered. "It looks like a sleeping snake."

Unravel means to investigate and solve or explain something complicated or puzzling. It also means to undo or separate the threads of something.

Paulo laughed and knelt to help. Their guide, Miguel, had warned them that a careless knot could ruin a whole afternoon. Together they began to unravel the loops, finding where one strand crossed another and gently coaxing each loop free.

As they worked, Natalya spoke about her brother back in Saint Petersburg, who was poorly, and how the worry inside her chest felt knotted too. Paulo listened. Sometimes, he thought, words helped people unravel feelings the way patient fingers unravel rope.

By the time the rope lay smooth, the mist had lifted. Miguel whistled from the ridge, waving them onward. They shouldered their packs and climbed, the palms swaying above like enormous feathers.

Halfway up, Natalya paused. "Funny," she said. "The knot in my chest started to unravel while we worked."

Paulo grinned. "Then we should keep walking before it ties itself again."

They pressed on, the path winding through the valley, every step loosening something neither of them could quite name.
