The woeful state of the royal garden

In the floating kingdom of Nebulara, where crystal towers pierced the purple clouds and hover-pods zipped between star-lit spires, Prince Zain made a woeful discovery in the royal garden.

Woeful means full of woe. It also means very sad or miserable and deplorably bad or serious.

This was the last living garden in the entire realm. While other kingdoms had surrendered to synthetic forests and artificial blooms, Zain had convinced his parents to preserve this precious patch of genuine Earth plants — roses that actually smelled, tomatoes you could truly eat, and a magnificent oak tree older than the floating cities themselves.

But this morning, the garden looked utterly woeful — every leaf had turned brown. The roses drooped like defeated soldiers. The ancient oak's branches sagged, full of woe, and the sight was very sad and miserable to behold.

"The atmospheric shield is failing," announced Chief Engineer Dr. Patel, studying the shimmering dome overhead. "Radiation from the solar flares penetrated the barrier. The damage to your garden is deplorably bad — actually, I'd say it's deplorably serious. These plants won't survive another day."

Zain's heart sank. This garden represented something irreplaceable — a living connection to Old Earth, before humanity had taken to the skies. Children came here to learn what real nature felt like. His grandmother had planted these very seeds.

"What if we reroute power from the palace entertainment systems?" Zain suggested desperately.

Dr. Patel's expression turned woeful. "That would mean no holo-games, no sonic showers, no—"

"Do it," Zain commanded.

For three woeful days, the palace functioned on minimal power whilst engineers repaired the atmospheric shield. The royal family ate simple meals. Zain studied by candlelight.

But when the shield finally hummed back to life, and the first green shoots emerged from the seemingly dead soil, Zain knew every sacrifice had been worthwhile.
