Docile — A Vocabulary Story
The Docile Droid
Twelve-year-old Theo and his Mum were shopping at the Mars Colony Tech Fair. In one of the displays, they found two household robots—one gleaming silver, one matte black.
"The X-47 model," the salesperson said, pointing to the silver one. "It's completely docile. This model does exactly what you say, no questions asked."
Docile means easily taught, led, or managed. It also means obedient.
"And this one?" Mum asked, eyeing the black robot.
"The Thinker-9. More expensive. Makes suggestions, debates decisions, offers alternatives."
"We'll take the docile one," Mum decided. "Cheaper, and I don't need arguments from a machine."
Three days later, Theo realised the problem.
"X-47, we need to fix the oxygen filter," he said urgently as the habitat's alarms bleeped. "Command accepted." The robot headed for the filter.
"Wait! You need the replacement part from storage first!"
"Understood." It pivoted obediently toward storage.
"No, wait—check which filter is broken before getting parts!"
The robot stopped mid-step, awaiting the next instruction.
Theo groaned. The X-47 was perfectly docile, following every command without hesitation. But it had zero initiative. If he said "make lunch," it would stand in the kitchen until he specified every single step.
When the dust storm hit that evening, things got worse.
"X-47, secure the solar panels!"
The robot marched outside into the raging storm.
"STOP! I meant after the storm passes!"
It stopped immediately, getting pelted with red dust.
Mum rushed over. "What's happening?"
"It's too docile!" Theo shouted over the wind. "It just does exactly what I say, even when it's dangerous or makes no sense!"
They dragged the dust-covered robot inside.
Later, Mum laughed tiredly. "Maybe being docile isn't always best. That Thinker-9 model would've questioned the stupid commands."
Theo nodded, watching the X-47 stand motionless, waiting for instructions. "Yeah. Sometimes you need something that thinks, not just obeys."
"Next upgrade," Mum promised, "we're getting the argumentative one."
